It’s the first time the Reds have faced the Danish club who finished runners-up in Group D of the Europa League group stages. Prior to that, they knocked out Southampton in the play-offs of the competition, having dropped out of the Champions League qualifying round following defeat to Cypriot side APOEL.

FC Midtjylland were only formed in 1999 – the year of the Reds’ famous Treble triumph – and won the Danish championship for the first time in their history last season.

The Reds Boss LVG will be in two minds with this competition, as it is not favoured by many English Clubs he will have a part of his mind wanting to only concentrate on the Premier League. With Spurs, Leicester and Liverpool all surprisingly playing well and in contention for Champions League next season, who can blame him here.

Man Utd Will be weak in defence, with the long term injuries of Bastian, Shaw, Valencia and Young. Added to this list last weekend was Darmian, meaning youngster Love or Varela will be thrown into action. Whoever takes advantage of the opportunity between Varela and Donald Love will likely be our right-back for the next few games because Darmian is going to be sidelined for the best part of two months.

One Key Statistic is that Midtjylland have lost seven of their last ten games. They are still in their winter break and, having not played since December, they could be caught cold by Manchester United. The Danish side have worked miracles to get this far but the fact they were beaten 5-0 and 4-1 by Napoli in the group stage does not bode well for a tie with the Red Devils.

I can’t see Van Gaal fielding a B team, he will want and needs to win as many games as he can now in the run in.

Expected formation for the clash.

Lingard has come into form recently, really showing the potential that Alex Ferguson saw in him 3 years ago.

Martial has been causing Havoc on the left wing in recent games, with amazing cut-ins and a powerful right footed shot, his position on the LW is more or less guaranteed! Just like Rooney, if he is fit he will play!

Defensively, Borthwick-Jackson has been playing great, showing a Patrice Evra styled essence and overlapping Martial before putting in a great cross! This is something Man Utd have missed over the seasons, both Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia really struggle whipping a decent ball into the box.
